A frame makes a picture. But the frame might always have been differently
shaped, and that fact makes the picture more complicated than it first appears. This “picture which might have been” asserts itself subtly, though often as powerfully as the one that we are directed to see and believe. After all, what might we want the picture to be?
A border directs us to believe its own certainty and finality. But the distinctions that it awakes, continually challenge and erode its authority. Either /or? Here/ there? Them/ us? These questions and their suspect assumptions linger persistently. The alternative geographies they create within the imagination, and the routes they carve criss-cross between past and future, challenge the arbitrariness of distinctions, and necessarily participate with frames and borders as determinants of our fate.
Cine Sin Fronteras is a response, through the vehicle of cinema, to this tension between distinctions we are asked to recognize beyond question, and the questions that naturally arise in that process. Moving, speaking and imagining beyond borders, we begin to recognize the churning power of the confrontation between States and states of mind, between our humanity and its measurement between lines and within frames. The uneasiness of that recognition points up the incipient presence of other realities: those cultural expressions not defined on lists, those social forces never scripted but always in motion, and those geographies of relationship that no map can account for.
Fears, memories, histories, desires and dreams define an invisible but acknowledged landscape, and are among the most powerful terms by which individuals and populations move through space and time. Their phantom dimensions are mapped by our bodies, our speech, and the artifacts we leave along the way. The artists in this section are the cartographers of these realms, and of new vistas for cinema, in its engagement with the human condition.
