The Morelia International Film Festival is pleased to introduce this new festival section, representing our ongoing commitment to makers of indigenous media, including voices from around the world. The First Nations Forum acknowledges the dignity and history of indigenous cultures, the world’s First Nations, as distinct from the dimensions and histories of modern nation-states. It celebrates the unique forms and expressions of indigenous media worldwide, while recognizing the imperative to safeguard the heritage of autochthonous cultures through audio-visual representation. The festival’s recognition of indigenous expressions from within Mexico will continue, regularly supplemented by the contributions of international artists. It is our hope that these works, shown on an important new platform, will encourage new synergies, strategies and visions for artistic creation and intercultural dialogue.

The festival acknowledges the invaluable participation of UNESCO’s program “Red de Difusion: Las cámaras de la diversidad.” Organized by UNESCO’s Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean, this program identifies and distributes diverse media works by global indigenous communities to diverse exhibition platforms throughout the world. The Festival also acknowledges the vital support of the Mexican government’s Comisión Nacional para el Desarrollo de los Pueblos Indigenas (CDI). Thanks are also due to the organizers of the Festival de Video Indigena in Morelia, for their help in assembling these programs.

*All screenings and events in the Teatro José Rubén Romero are free and open to the Public.
*All programs are bilingual (Spanish/English), with simultaneous translation and subtitles as required.

PANEL DISCUSSION
• NEAR AND FAR: LOCAL AND GLOBAL COMMUNICATION
Teatro José Rubén Romero, 12:00 PM

Some of the videos in these presentations are made for local purposes, to preserve and pass down vital cultural legacies. Others were made for communication among communities, or to the world beyond indigenous networks. Some were made with the participation non-indigenous partners and supporters. They form a rich and varied selection, but one that invites questions: What are the important considerations, and the relative advantages, of making videos for either local purposes, or for wider distribution? This discussion brings together artists and media professionals for a discussion of these and related issues.
