FICM 2009

Call for entries

The Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) in its seventh edition calls on Mexican directors and producers to register their short films, documentaries and long films in this year's competition.

A selection of FICM's winning films will be exhibited in the next edition of the International Critics' Week in Cannes.

Beginning this year, FICM is officially recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the United States. The winning short films in the Fiction and Animation categories will be considered for the Oscar® nomination. For more information about the requirements to participate, please consult the Academy guidelines:

www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/rules/rule19.html

The Festival has four competitive sections:

Mexican Short Film

All Mexican short films may be eligible for registration into competition if: they were filmed between 2008 and 2009; they have a maximum screening time of 40 minutes; they have been filmed in 35mm and digital video format; their genre is fiction or animation and if they have not been shown in previous FICM editions. Since FICM is officially recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the winner in the fiction and animation short film category can be considered for an Oscar® (www.oscars.org) nomination. Short films with promotional purposes, that have been shown previously on television, or distributed commercially on DVD or freely on the Internet, will not be accepted. Films will be accepted, though, if they have been distributed on the Internet by using a restricted password for registered users.

Mexican Documentary

Any Mexican short film or long film documentary may be eligible for registration into competition if: it was filmed between 2008 and 2009; it has been filmed in 35mm and digital video format and has not been exhibited commercially nor shown in previous FICM editions.

Mexican Long Film

Any Mexican long film may be eligible for registration into competition if: it was filmed between 2008 and 2009; it has been filmed in 35mm and digital video format and has not been exhibited commercially in México nor shown in previous FICM editions. It is important that the film is the first or second work of the filmmaker.

Michoacana Section

All Michoacán films considered to participate in this section will also be considered for the Short Film, Documentary or Mexican Long Film sections and should follow their registration guidelines. Michoacán works that do not participate in the latter categories will be considered for the Michoacana Section. The winner of this category will have an automatic pass to the national competition that corresponds to its format (short film, long film or documentary). The films are chosen by a Selection Committee whose ruling is unquestionable.

Each section has an international jury composed of renowned specialists who choose the winners of each section. It will also be in charge of assigning the pertinent awards.

Michoacano Contest for Short Film Screenplay

Screenplays up to 10 pages long can participate in this competition. They should be written by Michoacán authors who were either born or reside in the state of Michoacán. The guidelines can be consulted in: www.moreliafilmfest.com

PRIZES

  1. A prize is awarded to the winners of Short Film Fiction, Short Film Animation, Short Film Documentary, Long Film Documentary and Long Film Fiction. Each prize consists of a sculpture named El Ojo, a piece designed by Michoacán artist Javier Marín; a diploma and 100,000 Mexican pesos in cash.
  2. An award is given for the Michoacana Section, which includes El Ojo, a diploma and 50,000 Mexican pesos in cash.
