The day began with the inauguration of Morelia LAB, which was attended by Marina Stavenhagen, Daniela Michel and Carlos Taibo. There were press conferences to introduce the short films in competition program 1, and the feature film Nos vemos, Papá by Lucía Carreras. In the afternoon, Alejandro Pelayo gave a conference entitled "Mexican Filmmakers in the United States" and the directors in competition met to talk about international festivals. At night, the UNAM Film Archive presented its signature medal to German director Volker Schlöndorff.

The day was packed with activities. In the morning Yolanda Cruz presented one of her documentaries accompanied by festival director Daniela Michel. Soon after midday, the "French Literature in Mexican Cinema" program was presented with the participation of Ignacio Durán, Guadalupe Ferrer, Marina Stavenhagen and Daniela Michel. In the evening, Luis Valdez spoke about his film Zoot Suit.

At night, Spanish actresses Marisa Paredes and Elena Anaya were on hand for the premiere of The Skin I Live In, Pedro Almodóvar's latest film. There were many other special programs and premieres.

The red carpet inauguration of the ninth edition of the Morelia International Film Festival was the meeting point of Mexican and international cinema artists. Different international celebrities made their appearances like: Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the Cannes Festival; Spanish actress Marisa Paredes; composer Michael Nyman; and directors Chris Weitz and Luis Valdez.

The opening ceremony was held at the Teatro Morelos with Roberto Fiesco and Mariana Linares as the masters of ceremony. The ninth edition of the Morelia International Film Festival was officially kicked of by the mayor of Morelia, the Michoacán state governor and festival directors, who shared a few words with the audience.

The ninth edition of the Morelia International Film Festival had its pre-inauguration in Pátzcuaro at the recently remodeled Teatro Emperador Caltzontzin. The ceremony was attended by Thierry Frémaux, general director of the Cannes Film Festival; composer and director Michael Nyman; Marina Stavenhagen, director of the Mexican Film Institute; Guadalupe Ferrer, director of the UNAM Film Archive; Daniela Michel, FICM director; and Alejandro Ramírez, FICM president.

Alejandro Ramírez, president of FICM; Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Batel, vice presidente of FICM; Marina Stavenhagen, general director of IMCINE, and Lucero García, assistant secretary of promotion for the tourism secretariat of Michoacán State, gave a press conference on Thursday, September 29, at Cinépolis Diana, to present the general program of the ninth edition of the festival, that will take place from October 15 to 23 in Morelia.
