About ¿Y el agua?:

The title: This short film was a comission from the Ecology Festival. I was very excited to think that this theme was in my hands and that I would be able to propose a solution. I hope we can begin to recover our water.

The Challenge: To finish very quickly and with a very limited budget. It was very complicated to reflect the predicament of Valle del Bravo while responding to the requirements of the town's Music and Ecology Festival. But the children's vision provided a fresh perspective.

Motivation to tell this story: Water is one of the most serious problems humanity will have to face. While I felt a great deal of responsibility in tackling this topic, I also felt it was a great privilege to offer an ecological solution which could be taken into account. I hope the film isn't just seen as entertainment and helps to convince local authorities of the need to store and use rain water. Water issues are already serious in the districts of Mexico City.

Experience in Morelia: Though I wasn't able to see many films, I did manage to see some excelent works such as the documentary on Libera Pray the Devil Back to Hell. Something else I enjoyed was the Alain Resnais retrospective. I only knew about some of his films, so it was a privilege to get an overview of his intense career.

Audience reaction in Morelia: Most of the people I know who saw the film loved it.

What's next for the film: I need some help with the distribution. I have several invitations from festivals which I'd best keep quiet about until the selection is made public.

In short:

What does it mean for you that your short film may be eligible to represent Mexico at the Oscars?

The Oscars aren't really a goal, I don't see it as a possibility. Maybe it has some appeal because it was made by children and the message is very clear, but I don't want to get caught up thinking about that, just the fact of getting this prize is already very important for me. (Marcelo) Ebrard should see it. I don't want to have any illusions, because you can suffer alot and get dissapointed . You shouldn't expect to get prizes. They come like this one, when you least expect it.

You've made several short films on water. Will you continue to explore this theme?

I just received a grant from FONCA with which I intend to publish a DVD called "Different ways of saying the same thing," where I plan to include all the short films I've made about water. Then I want to explore another topic which also greatly concerns me: the use of plastic and styrofoam.
