ANCESTRAS. PARTE DOS, a Canal 22 Project, Was Presented at the 24th FICM

As part of the 24th Morelia International Film Festival (FICM), "Permanencia", the first episode of Ancestras. Part Dos, an original production by Canal 22, was screened.

The event was attended by Alonso Milán Zepeda, the channel’s director, and Cecilia de León, the series’ producer. This second season is dedicated to Mazahua craftswomen from communities in the State of Mexico, primarily from San Francisco Tepeolulco, San Felipe Santiago, Villa de Allende, Toluca, and Capultitlán.

“Permanencia” tells the story of Marcelina Mendoza, an 80-year-old textile artisan who, throughout her life, has shared the knowledge necessary to preserve traditions that have been passed down through generations.

In a world that prioritizes immediacy, the protagonist highlights the value of those who keep community knowledge alive through practice and teaching.

During the presentation, Alonso Milán Zepeda spoke about the challenges he faced during the project, from writing the script to the importance of highlighting women and broadening their representation in audiovisual content. He also expressed his interest in producing a third season of the series.

Meanwhile, Cecilia de León explained that, while the first season was dedicated to women from Mexico’s past, the new season seeks to portray Indigenous women today, with special attention and detail given to textile art and the traditional knowledge associated with it.

The producer emphasized the importance of recognizing those who preserve these practices as custodians of knowledge, in the face of an increasingly fast-paced lifestyle.

Marcelina’s story highlights the family and community aspects of education through a reflection on the transmission of knowledge: “Educate a man, and you educate a person; educate a woman, and you educate a family”—a line that captures the importance of sharing what we’ve learned and keeping traditions alive.

Finally, the team invited the audience to attend the upcoming screening of the episode, scheduled for Thursday, October 22, at 11:00 a.m. at the Michoacán Regional Museum, as an opportunity to learn more about the stories of women who, through their craft, help preserve cultural heritage.
