“The Field of Human Relationships Doesn’t Run Out of Fuel”: Rodrigo García, Director of Las locuras

Las locuras, the latest film by director Rodrigo García, premiered at the 23rd Morelia International Film Festival (FICM).

At a press conference, joined by producers Gerardo Gatica and Pablo Zimbrón, as well as actresses Cassandra Ciangherotti, Natalia Solián, Naian González Norvind, Ilse Salas, and Fernanda Castillo, the director explained that the film addresses self-discovery marked by confinement, self-censorship, and social and family pressure in the intertwined stories of six women.

He explained that he explored the topic of mental health from different angles, saying that “the field of human relationships never runs out of fuel.” Expanding on the topic, he said that he believes it is important and essential for it to be ambiguous, to present a bit of a dilemma, even controversy, and to make the audience uncomfortable. “If you don’t make someone angry, the topics aren’t interesting.”

Fernanda Castillo, for her part, added that madness is a very fertile and creative place to work with stories and emotions, because women who have been called crazy are the ones who break the mold.

Both Ilse Salas and Natalia Solián agreed that talking about mental health is a fertile topic for building interesting stories that invite creative freedom; madness, Ilse added, gives women a certain permission in their daily lives when they feel overwhelmed by existence and at the very limits of life.

Natalia spoke about the life passions that drive you and drive you a little crazy. All characters face challenges, but the important thing is to continue telling stories, in a kind of resistance, as is the case with acting or any art form.

Regarding production and the challenges facing cinema in Mexico today, Pablo Zimbrón spoke about believing in audiences, giving them new things, reinvented things, and finding what works. Gerardo Gatica added that the way the story is communicated is very important and, above all, creating films that “we are interested in.”
