Kirill Serebrennikov), which was selected for the last Cannes Film Festival, was presented during the 23rd Morelia International Film Festival (FICM).The screening was presented by Julio Chavezmontes, the film's producer, and Sandino Saravia Vinary, its co-producer. “It's always a pleasure for me to bring our films to Morelia,” said the producer, grateful for the opportunity that the Michoacán capital represents for Piano. The film traces the escape of Josef Mengele, the Nazi doctor from Auschwitz, to South America to rebuild his life in hiding after World War II. Through the eyes of his son, who finds him again, Mengele is confronted with a past he can no longer ignore. From Buenos Aires to Paraguay, through Brazil, the man known as “The Angel of Death” arranges his methodical disappearance to avoid any kind of trial. At the beginning of the screening, Julio Chavezmontes told the audience that, for him, The Disappearance of Josef Mengele is a relevant story because it presents situations that speak to the contemporary world, where “structures of power are used and employed to protect genocidal criminals and war criminals.”The producer then urged the audience not to allow genocidal criminals to live with impunity without suffering the consequences of their actions.
