Sus películas han recibido el apoyo del Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía (IMCINE), los institutos Sundance y Tribeca, entre otros. Ha presentado su trabajo en America ReFramed y Netflix, siendo galardonado con los prestigiosos premios de la Fundación Guggenheim y Creative Capital. Su ópera prima, Memorias del futuro (2012), resultó ganadora del Premio LCI en el Festival Internacional de Cine UNAM (FICUNAM); su documental Purgatorio (2013), formó parte de la Selección Oficial del 11º FICM y fue ganador del Premio del Jurado en el New Orleans Film Festival, el Premio Michael Moore al Mejor Documental en el Ann Arbor Film Festival y el Premio del Jurado en el San Diego Latino Film Festival, entre otros; ese mismo año, la revista Filmmaker Magazine lo nombró uno de los 25 nuevos rostros del cine independiente.
