Tribute to Florence Delay Continues With SANS SOLEIL at the 24th FICM

As part of the programming for the 24th Morelia International Film Festival (FICM), Sans Soleil (1983) was screened as part of a tribute to French actress and writer Florence Delay. This section honors the French scholar’s career and explores her contributions to both cinema and literature.

The screening was introduced by director Emilio Maillé, the curator of this section, who shared that *Sans Soleil* is one of the films he has watched most often in his life. He encouraged the audience to explore the work of its director, Chris Marker—whom he described as “the most famous of unknown filmmakers.”

During his speech, Maillé highlighted Marker's importance in the history of cinema and recalled that his film La Jetée (1962) inspired works such as Memento (2000), by Christopher Nolan; Año uña (2007), by Jonás Cuarón, and 12 Monkeys (1995), by Terry Gilliam.

He further explained that Sans Soleil was included in the tribute specifically because of Florence Delay’s voice-over—a contribution that links the film to the body of work being celebrated in this section.

Maillé also thanked those who attended the screening of Procès de Jeanne d’Arc (1962), in which Delay plays the protagonist, and invited the audience to the last performance of the cycle, The Arruza Years (1996), in which the writer participates as a screenwriter.
